Elvis came to Buckeye Ridge from a ranch facing legal trouble, along with several of our other residents. When he first arrived, he was incredibly withdrawn and unsure of the people around him. It took nearly a year of patience, consistency, and giving him space before he truly began to trust us.
During that time, fellow llama Tupaca rarely left his side. Tupaca was his protector, always looking out for Elvis while he adjusted to his new home. Over time, Elvis began to find his confidence, and these days, he has no problem standing up for himself when Tupaca tries to be the boss.
Today, Elvis is independent, friendly, and always good for a laugh. He'll walk right up to you, loves being around the farm, and has a funny habit of sticking his face down into the drinking water.
Watching Elvis grow from a scared, withdrawn llama into the confident and curious resident we know today has been incredibly rewarding. His story is a reminder of just how much patience, safety, and trust can change an animal's life.
At around 3½ years old, Maverick has already overcome more than most horses his age. Before he was born, his mom suffered severe injuries. Veterinarians cared for her long enough for Maverick to be born safely, but sadly, she didn't survive her injuries.
Afterward, Maverick entered a foster program through Phoenix Equine Rescue before eventually making his way to Buckeye Ridge, where he's been thriving ever since.
Over the past few months, we've been focusing on building his confidence, trust, and foundational skills. He's already been trained to wear a saddle, lead, and work from the ground.
The next step will be to start him under saddle so he can continue progressing toward becoming a safe and reliable partner for the individuals we serve.

Animal Encounters are guided opportunities to spend meaningful time with our rescued animals. Depending on the experience, participants may help with grooming, feeding, or simply learning about an animal’s personality, story, and care.
Buckeye Ridge is home to a variety of rescued animals, and available encounters may vary. Because the health and well-being of our animals always come first, participation depends on each animal’s needs, comfort, and availability.
During designated encounters, yes! Grooming and feeding may be part of your experience when appropriate. Our team will guide you on how to safely interact with each animal.
Advance reservations are recommended so our team can prepare for your visit and ensure the appropriate animals and staff are available.
Many of our encounters can be enjoyed by children and families. Age requirements, adult supervision, and participation guidelines may vary depending on the animal and experience.
Creating welcoming and accessible experiences is an important part of our mission. Because individual needs vary, we encourage guests to contact us before their visit so we can discuss accommodations and help create the best possible experience.
Not every rescued animal at Buckeye Ridge serves the same role. Animals involved in guided programming are selected and engaged based on the specific experience, their temperament, welfare, and the guidance of qualified professionals.
Our animals come to Buckeye Ridge through different rescue circumstances, and each has a story of their own. Part of visiting the Ridge is getting to know those stories and learning about responsible animal care and rescue.
We recommend comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for an outdoor, working rescue environment. Depending on the weather, you may also want layers, sunscreen, or rain gear.
In most cases, absolutely! We love seeing guests capture their time at the Ridge. Our team will let you know if photography isn't appropriate during a particular interaction.
Access to animal areas may be limited for the safety of both our guests and animals. The best way to enjoy a more personal, hands-on experience is through a scheduled encounter or Buckeye Ridge program.
Yes! Animal sponsorships are a meaningful way to continue your connection after your visit. Sponsorships help support essentials such as food, veterinary care, enrichment, habitat needs, and everyday care for the rescued animals who call Buckeye Ridge home.
Your participation helps support the work of Buckeye Ridge Rescue & Retreat, including caring for our rescued animals and furthering our mission of creating meaningful animal-assisted and nature-based experiences for the people we serve.
