Animal Encounters

Get ready to meet some of the personalities at the heart of Buckeye Ridge! Our animal encounters invite you to get up close, learn their stories, and experience the joy of connecting with our rescued animals in fun and meaningful ways.

From hands-on grooming to feeding experiences, our animal encounters offer a simple and meaningful way to spend time with the rescued animals of Buckeye Ridge. Each experience gives you the opportunity to slow down, learn more about their individual personalities and stories, and enjoy the kind of connection that makes time at the Ridge so special.

Whether you’re participating in one of our programs or simply joining us for a little animal time, each encounter is designed with the well-being of our animals in mind while creating moments of connection, curiosity, and plenty of smiles.

As our animals settle in and our programs continue to grow, so will the ways you can meet, learn from, and connect with them.

Animal Encounter FAQs

What is an Animal Encounter at Buckeye Ridge?

Animal Encounters are guided opportunities to spend meaningful time with our rescued animals. Depending on the experience, participants may help with grooming, feeding, or simply learning about an animal’s personality, story, and care.

Which animals can I meet?

Buckeye Ridge is home to a variety of rescued animals, and available encounters may vary. Because the health and well-being of our animals always come first, participation depends on each animal’s needs, comfort, and availability.

Can I pet or feed the animals?

During designated encounters, yes! Grooming and feeding may be part of your experience when appropriate. Our team will guide you on how to safely interact with each animal.

Do I need to schedule an Animal Encounter in advance?

Advance reservations are recommended so our team can prepare for your visit and ensure the appropriate animals and staff are available.

Are Animal Encounters appropriate for children?

Many of our encounters can be enjoyed by children and families. Age requirements, adult supervision, and participation guidelines may vary depending on the animal and experience.

Are your Animal Encounters accessible for individuals with disabilities?

Creating welcoming and accessible experiences is an important part of our mission. Because individual needs vary, we encourage guests to contact us before their visit so we can discuss accommodations and help create the best possible experience.

Are the animals trained therapy animals?

Not every rescued animal at Buckeye Ridge serves the same role. Animals involved in guided programming are selected and engaged based on the specific experience, their temperament, welfare, and the guidance of qualified professionals.

Where do the animals come from?

Our animals come to Buckeye Ridge through different rescue circumstances, and each has a story of their own. Part of visiting the Ridge is getting to know those stories and learning about responsible animal care and rescue.

What should I wear?

We recommend comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for an outdoor, working rescue environment. Depending on the weather, you may also want layers, sunscreen, or rain gear.

Can I take photos with the animals?

In most cases, absolutely! We love seeing guests capture their time at the Ridge. Our team will let you know if photography isn't appropriate during a particular interaction.

Can I visit the animals without booking an encounter?

Access to animal areas may be limited for the safety of both our guests and animals. The best way to enjoy a more personal, hands-on experience is through a scheduled encounter or Buckeye Ridge program.

Can I sponsor an animal I meet?

Yes! Animal sponsorships are a meaningful way to continue your connection after your visit. Sponsorships help support essentials such as food, veterinary care, enrichment, habitat needs, and everyday care for the rescued animals who call Buckeye Ridge home.

Where does the money from my Animal Encounter go?

Your participation helps support the work of Buckeye Ridge Rescue & Retreat, including caring for our rescued animals and furthering our mission of creating meaningful animal-assisted and nature-based experiences for the people we serve.
